No artist did so much to add life to the skill of painting, with a vivacity that feels like a kind of magic. Until Rubens, the skill of depiction was moving forward step by step, and he seems to me to be its apotheosis - after Rubens, art advanced in different ways but depiction was never bettered.
He also played a significant role as a diplomat
