Giorgioni is the greatest, really. I mean along with Leonardo and Raphael, but personally I feel closer to him. There’s realism, and an almost impressionist texture of light, and above all a consistent mysterious beauty that I cannot find anywhere else. It hits me deeply every time. And yet his name is nothing like as big as Leo or Mike or Ralph… I used to think it’s because they are so rare that people don’t come across him enough, but there are 55 here! Many more than I knew. (And this doesn’t even include my favourite, the little one tucked away in the Simon Norton gallery in Pasadena)
