Whilst this is not one of my favourite paintings aesthetically, it tells a thousand works about Gauguin's artistic style and personal life. Its primitive depiction of young Tahitian girls, combined with its post-impressionist style is illuminating in summing up the artist.

A new biography of him puts him in a better light
