Whilst the painting seems initially uninteresting, the history surrounding Gaugin's exploitation and sexualisation of young Tahitian girls during his time in French Polynesia makes this piece all the more interesting, as one is able to connect it to wider themes of coloniality etc.

I also wonder how much his feel for colour was influenced by his early years in Lima.
